Gars because they are a north american native and they don't jump (I never had one jump). I don't like my fish jumping to their death. Arowanas like to kill themselves that way.

actually gars do jump, just not as much as arows

i have found my dark alligator gar on the floor once (must have been there for several hours) and thought it was dead but he recovered fully. now i have weights on the tops of that tank. i have had very small longnoses jump, as well as a 10" juvenile a long time ago. if there is an opening, just about any fish can jump out of the tank. arows often feed in the wild by jumping, and its no surprise that they jump out more in captivity as well...but gars have their acrobatic skills as well

if i had to pick one group i'd go for gars...but i think if we surveyed enough hobbyists the overall answer would point towards arows!--

If you're talking space constraints then you'd obviously go with the arrows. However, if you want some cool old fish ( guess that's actually both of them) then I would say gars. If you can get ahold of some of the rarer gar species I would say go for it. We might all know a guy that has access to some of these gars

From what I've seen the gars are less likely to be spastic than the arrows. With that said, I dislike having spastic fishes because they just stress me out rather than calm, which is the reason it's fun to have fish... to relax you. So in the end I would have to say stick with the gars even though my earlier vote went with the arrow. I rationalized it and now it makes sense to go with gars.

i've kept both and the only time I enjoyed the gars was when they ate. Other than that they just sit motionless most of the day. If you like gars, just hang a picture in the tank...about the same fun.
In comparision the Aro never stops moving and it just swims back and forth in a graceful fluid motion all day. And it is something to see eat as well.
I tried every predatory fish I could find through my college days, we raised them as big as 10 gallons could handle every semister or two them traded them for another breed.
I had snakeheads for a long time, till I got a Silver Aro. I've been hooked ever since.

i live in australia and i paid $900 for a 25 cm silver arowana.
now its my pride and joy and is 35 cm. over here they're pretty rare and that could be a good thing cause not many people have them and therefore u appreciate it more.

Aros! Although my Florida Gar had more personality. People seemed more impressed with the Arowana when they came over there. Pretty much just ignored the Gar swimming around

If you get both make sure they are equivalent in size. I had to sell my 12" Gar because my 24" Silver Aro picked on him all the time

Miss that guy too!

I'd have to say gar. Like Duckman, I'm a big native fan and as interesting as Arrows are, I REFUSE to pay those huge price's for one. Might I add how badly the lfs's around here suck!!I cant find a true Gar anywhere. There's only one place around here that has natives(waiting on a Muskie) and he wont have them untill spring.

in Primitive fish family , Arowana Resemble T-Rex and Gar resemble Spinosaur .
I love Arowana and Gar for their reptillian like apperance and their predatory diet , just love to look at the way they catch their prey .

the gars will be killed and/or eaten in a relatively short period of time if the jard acts like most of the jards out there. i would HIGHLY suggest against it as you will end up losing some expensive fish--

my gars are really really motionless most of the time, my black aro is so much more interesting to watch. and when I bring people to my house and see my tank the aro always captures their attetion first.
