a LFS has 4 "silver arowana" about 2" - 2.5" for $17 each
is that a good price??
anyone have a link to a picture of an adult?

ive seen arowanas before but i know literally nothing about them. they look awesome from the pictures, but i need to know everything
how big will it get, and how fast?
what kinds of food?
water conditions? and temperature?
i currently have a p.bass tank started, and they are about 3"-5" monos and a tem
would the arowana be able to go in once he gets bigger?
what about a tiger shovelnose catfish? i know he will outgrow everyone, but if until then, would he be ok?

anything i'm missing? i know these are just the basics, but i'm kind of new to fish in general, but i think it would be a great fish, for a good price, if they arent toooo crazy-hard to keep happy

Silver Arowana will grow in excess of 27" so you need a huge tank, It will grow about 2" per month give a decent tank size and a good balanced diet

I got my aro in the beginning of sept and he was about 8". I paid $20 for him but they go for around $40-$50 here for that size. He did grow abou 2" a month cause he's about 17"-18" now. I feed mine a bunch of different stuff from but his staple diet is cichlid gold pellets. I love my aro so I would say go for it. He should get along fine with what you have now. I have mine with Pbass too. As long as the size is good and noone is big enough to eat or be eatin, your good Here's a few pics of mine from when I first got him to present. I hope it helps. Oh by the way temp and Ph are fine. If you are already keeping Pbass the requirements are the same.

i see youve got him in there with driftwood and vegitation ... i was a bit hesitant about him becuase i want mine setup like a native tank (a lot like yours) ...
does he seem to like it and enjoy the surroundings???
Chubbs
Sure. He really appreciated the floating vegitation when he was small but now that he's bigger it seems to be more annoying to him cause he would rather have the top space. I'll probaly take alot of it out once the Pbass get a bit bigger but they still use it for cover now. The Aro has addapted and tends to swim more mid tank then top now

$20 isnt a bad price for a baby arowana. I was lucky and only paid $13 for mine at the local pet store, but you probably wont find anything lower than that. With an arowana so small as only 2", it is a risk to buy him as they tend to have a harder time surviving since they are so young.

Naturally arowanas live near the surface of the water and wait for food much like african butterflies, if you know that species. They will love any floating plants you can add into the tank for cover.

Arowanas will eat anything small enough that fits into their mouths and dried foods are reluctantly accepted. I fed my arowana dried tubifex worms and frozen krill, but i had to phsically move the krill and blow on the tubifex, for movement, to get the arowana to eat.

At such a young age they are prone to changes in enviornment so be careful not to change anything, such as temperature, too quickly. As a shy, young, fish they may initially have trouble with aggressive species, such as chichlids.

As the arowana grows, you will have to secure the lid of the tank. They are extremly powerful and can jump straight out of the water with ease. I have heard reports of arowanas knocking off lids that were weighed down by bricks.

Hope this was useful to you, any questions, please feel free to ask.

dude!
this post is old....but anyway...
from my experience, aros cannot be under too much lighting (HQI or such), must eat live food every now and then (tenebrius, crickets, frogs, mice etc.), must have a well covered tank, tankmates that wont fit in his mouth (i like to go with dats and fei fengs =)), will grow to 47" given enough space, will most eventually get drop eye (try adding a gar or archer fish so it will have something at the top to look at, or maybe even plants (IMO)), and will probably kill any other aros that go in with it (if u want more than 1, try having 6, though ive seen tanks with 2-3 going well, have no idea how they do it!)
p.h - 6.5-7
temp. 78-86
best kept at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0.25ppm nitrate!

Around here, its rare to get an aro cheaper than $50, regardless of species or size. sometimes, i have seen newborns(still with the yolk sac and all) sold for a mere $12. but that is rare and i jump on any deal cheaper than 25$.
