I was at the Asian LFS near Atlanta that is farther away from my house. I normally go fish"ing" on Sundays, and this place is closed, so I rarely get there. Anyways.... he had a 36" BULKY Platinum Silver.. Or so he called it. He has told me in the past that he gets one or two platinums a month.. Which I didn't really believe, but didn't immediately see as a lie. So this guy was enormous.. a little droop eye, but not horrible. He said that they develop their platinum-ness. He said you can't tell until they are 9" or so when they will be a platinum. Also, with this one, the center row of scales on his back were beige-ish like a normal silver. I have never seen one in person before, but the rest was WHITE.. no pink or off white.. just WHITE.

He said he had sold it at 9" or so as a platinum for $500 two years ago. The guy can't keep him any more, so he has him on consignment in his shop.

So with it having the normal stripe on his top is it really a platinum.. Do they really develop it??

Other than the non white row of scales on his back... It's a platinum... so does that make it not a platinum??

im not an expert at grading arowanas. just a hobbyist. but if a Red Tail Gold is born platinum. its back is suppose to be dark. so its still considered as platinum?

i will say it is up to individual perception. just like what some people argue about the gold head of cross back arowanas. just afew years ago with just a tiny speck of gold on the head is considered as gold head. but nowadays hobbyists will only consider a gold head if it is a patch of around 1cm diameter gold on the head. other than that it is only considered as gold lines/specks.

but to be able to get platinum almost every month seems a little impossible. unless its by selective breeding.
Danh
If this guy could do it, I guess pretty much anyone else could get them. He doesn't breed them himself. He actually seems to have fewer aros than the other local Asian store.

Anyway... I guess to call the 36" a true platinum would be up to whoever was calling it that. It could be, but some people might not consider it once since it's not purely white. Even with the droop eye and the non white, it was still freaking awesome. It was most massive aro I have seen before. I have seen longer, but not nearly that bulky.

over here in singapore that platinum silver is the one and only piece in singapore. although there are afew platinum of asians here. but none of them are for sale. dont think anyone can afford them too.
Danh
I know of at least one other over here... And this seems to be one... So 36" VERY BULKY, scales, fins and gills in good condition. I have seen worse droop eye, but it does have some... If it was really a platinum, what would be going rate be? Many thousand USD, right?
Schmike
if a platinum silver can cost almost 10,000 times the price of a normal silver of around the same size over here in singapore, i believe it will be around that rate compared to a normal silver over there.

There is way too much bull out there when it comes to these fish.

I would say that is NOT a platinum silver. Platinum silver must have a black eyes and the body must be all white. That is just a normal silver aro. Silver aro losses it pinkish red on the fins as they grow. The upper body is dark and the lower body is light almost white. I kept silver aros in outdoor pond back in asia and they reach to 30-34". Also it probably doesn't have enough carotene.

I have one that is the same length, but less bulky.. Their colors look nothing alike. I've also seen longer silvers. They look nothing alike.

Can you take pics of the fish? I only know 4 morphs of silver arowana.
1. The platinim silver: Black eyes and the body must be all white.
2. Albino silver
3. Red fin silver: Commonly seen in lfs. They have pinkish red fins (except pectorals fins) when juvenile and started to loss the pink color as they grow. Some of the pink color remain but can only be seen on the tip of the fins. Wild silver also have this color.
4. Yellow tail silver: Also seen in lfs. Similar to the red fin except it got a yellow color.

My 36" still has a lot of pink.

I don't know. I personally would consider his a platinum. Maybe it's not officially, but I say it is. I got some phone pics. Trying to figure out how to get them out of the verizon pix place...

Some silver lost the pink some don't. Your probably eats lot of food that contain plenty of carotenes. You also doing a good job of taking care of your silver. Just like high quality red asian aro, if you take good care of it really well it will develop very nice.

a pic can tell alot. i used to have a silver which almost outgrew its 3ft tank. i know i was very cruel to that silver. but i was still in school back then. the silver was already sold to a breeder. can't bear to see it suffer in such a confined tank. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
