Ok, my little silver arowana, who is right aroun 4.5 inches came down with a fungal or bacterial infection...I'm not too sure since I haven't received a lot of help in the matter. Well anyways, I set him up a 38 gallon hospital tank today and in my stupidity, he got pulled into the intake tube on my filter...it didn't have the plastic grille on it. Well, somewhat luckily, he had only been in there a few seconds because I had just looked at him and then noticed him gone under a minute later. Now he's sporting an almost missing tail fin, as well as pretty ragged anal and dorsal fins. He's still alive, but I'm just wondering how well he might recuperate and what I can do to help him along. I have Pimafix and EM tablets in there for his bacterial or fungal infection...should I be doing anything else?

My severum may be in trouble...And guys, I can't say this enough...thanks for all your help.

Well it sounds like you've had a bad run of luck there bud, sorry. Is he still eating? If he is thats at least a decent sign of survival. If not you seem to be doing everything OK. You might wanna try raising the temp. a little and maybe adding in a little salt. Just my .02. Good luck on that situation.

Unfortunately no, he hasnt been eating for the last couple of days. It seems like whatever infection he has got to him and then going in the filter was the last straw...when I woke up, he was just laying there on the bottom of the tank hardly doing anything. So I did what I had to do...although I didn't want to do it.

The only thing I can say is to keep an eye on water quality. I wouldn't add any more meds since you've already added more than what I would do. Aros are one of those fish that can be quite sensitive to meds.

Sorry for your loss, I hope it doesn't discourage you to get another one.

Nope, it's not going to discourage me at all...if my LFS has any when I go tomorrow, I'll be bringing another one home. I'm hooked on arowanas, such a beautiful and graceful fish, what's not to love? He was actually doing quite well after I separated him into the other tank, he was swimming around just like he was before he stopped eating. He was looking and acting so much better until he got pulled into that danged filter. Such idiocy on my part, I know I won't make that mistake again.

Good luck with the new Aro.

the first thing is when u bought the aro did u leave it in the bag and left it in ur tank for 15 minutes so it get use to ur tank temp. 3 of my aros died cause of that but i was only 10 back then. I bought a 5 in silver aro like 3 month ago and i left it in the bag and in the tank for 15 minutes and it came out to be fine my aro is now 7 in. The only thing i can tell u is if the aro is reallt weak and get sucked in to ur filter alot and sinks to the floor of ur tank it is diein of shock not an infection. HOPE UR ARO GET WELL SOON

You might not have noticed, but the aro has been dead for quite some time now. He was doing very well in my tank from day one...I did just temperature acclimate him, I didn't do a drip acclimation, but that was not the problem. He was a very healthy eater, he ate within ten minutes of me putting him in the tank. In fact, in the two weeks that I had him, he had grown almost an inch. After two weeks, my green severum started developing some white spots (not ich, turned out to be lymphocystitis, spelling is most likely wrong) Since I had noticed the spots on the severum, I had noticed the arowana hadn't eaten in two days, very unusual for him. He was also not quite as active, althought still swimming around. I looked at my arowana and noticed he had a couple of the same white spots as well as a white slimy film coming from his gills. I transferred him to my hospital tank, the filter of which had no screen and sucked him right up, to his demise. The filter is what caused the arowana to die, if he hadn't been sucked up into the filter, I imagine he would still be swimming around to this day.

I hope my next aro does a lot better than the first as well, but I'm not going to try again until I get a larger tank. I'm in the market for either a 240 or a 300, I've got my eye on a couple choices, but nothing until I get my own place. Until then, the 75 will be fine.
