Hi!!! I have recently purchased my first aquarium (50 gallons). I have 6 cory cats in there (2 albinos, 2 paleatus, and two I'm not sure). About twenty minutes ago I added my first black ghost knife fish. I know he is blind.. but he seems very lost, he can't find his cave and is just looking for a place to hide. rigth now he is upright swimming up against a decoration in the middle of the tank. Any suggestions????

Is the cave big enough for the knife to fit in compfortably? Both my BGKs took a while to settlle in and feel comfortable. When he does find his cave don't be alarmed if during the day he lies on his side as if he is dead. This just means they feel comfortable. The are nocturnal and only really come out during the night, unless you get them use to a daytime feeding that is. Oh and don't add any small fish to the tank or they might start dissapearing...Good Luck!

Yeah.. the cave is big enough. Actually... it's not really a cave. I used a piece of flat rock and leaned it against the front side of the tank. I read this works well because they like two exits and then you can see them all day. ??? My two paleatus cory cats are kind-a small still.... do you think they'll be okay? One of them ran into my black ghost 's head earlier and he didn't seem to mind. Right now he is doing the laying on his side acting like he's dead thing, but I can see his gills and mouth move... he's hiding under another decoration... so I guess if he's happy there!!!! Do they sleep like that all day? I know they are nocturnal... but do they ever move around during the day?

Mine comes out during the day, but not for very long at a time. What are you using for lighting?

QUOTE
front side of the tank

Is there a lot of movement at the front of the tank? The fish might not be comfortable with this. My knifes seem to prefer to be tucked away in back corner of the tank. Your two Corrys should be fine. I'd just be wary of adding anything as small as neons...

Something else i just remembered... Keep an eye on your nitrates, BGK are quite fussy...I'm assuming your tank is cycled?

P.S Is there a knife fish icon yet? wink.gif

Wow... cycled... not completely... the guy at our fish store said it should be fine though... Our tank has been running for about two weeks. I haven't tested today but yesterday everything was at zero except ammonia which was .5 ppm...... I"ll keep an eye on it though.... I have a flourescent light (I'm pretty sure) .... same as the fish store he came from... but I do turn off the light for 12 hours at night.

If you want to see your knife more during the day you could try an Antic Blue moon light bulb. It's what i use on my BGK's tank. If your knife is inactive during the day i'd watch he is getting enough food. If you are worried, try feeding after you turn the lights off and have a hall light on or something and just check he is eating ok. And mainy, keep up on water changes, welcome to this forum and enjoy your BGK. Oh BTW, how big is he?

Edit: Spelling...
