Just wondering if anyone has ever kept a silver and black arowana together before or maybe multiples of each together. I've only heard of a few people doing so.

If you have a large enough tank i don't think there would be a problem. I've seen pictures of people who have several silvers together or have several blacks together. Don't really see them mixed to much together though. Generally you either have one or the other. Don't get me wrong though, it probably can be done. Key would be a large tank and growin them up together from a young age.

Blacks are generally less outgoing than Silvers so I would caution against having one of each together. In a large enough enclosure, then it might work with a single Silver and a couple Blacks. I was going to try this in our 800 gallon pond once it gets done.
As a sidenote, I would never mix two Arowanas (of any species) together...alone or in groups of three or more. Some people claim to have had luck keeping two Aros together, but how long it will last is the question. I tried putting my Black and Silver together and it went all of about five minutes before they were snapping at each other.

Just from the arowana perspective, I wanted more action on the top-dwelling fish side. I will have my 180 wide in soon (72x24x24) and I know this won't house aros for life but it should for a couple years. I have heard about the 3 or more group thing, but I think that would be a little crammed when they got to be 18+ inches, and would cut down on how long they could live in the tank. Any suggestions?

I would just keep one. A group would get cramped way before they reached 18" IMO.

It's all trial and error. Alot of it also comes down to the individual fish. I have two 10" silvers together and both have perfect fins which means they dont even nip at each other. It does help to have more.
Their are also alot of small things that you can do to help try minimise agro. I have my tank with alot of floating bits of drift wood, this helps to create barriers between the fish.

Nice...yeah, aros. are a fish that i've been wanting to get for a looooong time but haven't been able to because of small tank size. But now that i have these 100 and 125gal tankz...i could grow them out for a bit and then put them in the 300gal. which my dad finally decided to let me take over. Gonna be pimp. I think it would look soo awesome to see several silvers or several blacks swimming slowly back and forth in a tank. How are they with other large top fish? I also wanna get some more Red Tailed Giant Gouramis, but don't know how well they would get along with the aros. Tips?
Peck...good idea with the floating wood. Some people use styrofoam for this as well, but the floating wood would look better.

Yeah, but how big were they? And how long were they together? A store setting really isn't a reliable way to tell if it can be done because they're often not there long enough to see what would happen over time.
