I just purchased a Green Arowana which had been shipped to me from interstate. I noticed after a shortwhile looking at it it had a dropped tail which looked kind of odd so I researched it and found other symptoms that it has which were continuously gulping air and releasing air from its anus.
At the moment the fish swims fairly normal no serious angles but after cruising the tank for a while it sits on the bottom alot.

I'm worried it has a swim bladder problem and am not sure about what I can do or what its chances are of survival.

Symptoms are consistant with this article I found though the angle of its swimming is mild

if it is always in a 45 degree position with its head pointing towards the bottom it is swim bladder problem. you will need to get special medication from a vet to get it cured. once an aro is infected with swim bladder problem you need to take note of its diet. it can suffer a relapse if not well taken care of.

I have seen my jar, silver and black gulp air... but not release any from their anus.

what is its diet now? try not to give it pellets or any dried food. over here in singapore we usually feed our aros with crickets, mealworm, superworm, small frogs, bull frogs, feeder fishes, market prawns, etc...some even feed their aros with centipedes.

swim bladder is a serious problem. i believe you should look up the retailer and get a replacement. a G1 red (which usually cost SGD $1k and above) with swim bladder problem can cost only SGD$400-SGD$500. not to say a green which cost < SGD$100 over here.

gulping of air is usually caused by high ammonia level or lack of oxygen in the tank. but releasing bubbles from their anus definitly mean there is problem with the fish.

I may have to send it back interstate to get it replaced a disapointment cause I payed alot for it $850 AUSD

better replace it. make sure they replace you with a healthy one.

welcome. hope to see you with a nice healthy asian soon. i understand that its not cheap to get an asian over at your side. can't imagine myself spending such a huge amount to get a green with swim bladder problem. i will not even spend that amount to get a G1 red or cross back with swim bladder problem.
