Just bought 4 - 2.5"-3.5" Silver Arowanas for my 600G (96x48x30) Cute little suckers. I was told they were eating flake at the LFS but when I tried to feed them at home they ignored the flake so I chopped up some of my Cichlid sticks and they attacked them I'll post a few pics when the lighting comes on tomorrow. Any tips from current Aro owners would be greatly appreciated.

I think the key to a good colorful silver, is to be sure and have them on a variety of foods. I feed mine cichlid sticks, pellets, fresh shrimp, catfish, blood and black worms as well as earthworms. just switch it up here and there and they will love you for it. Good luck, I know you will enjoy them. They are a trure treat to have in your tank. I can't wait to see some of your pics and watch them grow. Here's a few pics of mine. He's about 16-18" right now.

Great looking Aro you have there. I was thinking about setting up my 29G and using it to breed convicts as live food for my Aro's when they get a bit bigger. That way I also know they arent carrying any disease and then having to treat 600G. Also has anyone ever fed their Aro's Trout Chow? I have access to an unlimited supply if its a good addition to a varied diet. Oh and pics comming soon.

Convicts are a good choice for feeders. They breed and grow fast. The only thing I see is that you will need more than one tank to breed them. I would have at least 3 to deal with their various needs as they grow to feeder size.
As far as the trout pellets are concerned, I think the operative word there is Trout. It may be ok, and not harm them but as far as nutritional value, I would do a lot of comparing to the pellets you use now and see what the difference is. I personally wouldn't use them, but that's me, and it doesn't mean that it's a horrible idea. I just don't know what's made of.

Feed it with lot of food that contain carotene. It will make the fish more pinkish red.

Thanks for the tips especially the carotene advice. I'm working on the pics but I didnt get to the lights today. I just built the tank and everything up to this point was the tank itself, filters and the lid.

Finnaly took a few pics but between the cloudyness from adding the substrate the Blackwater Expert its still a bit hard to get a good picture only one of them is worth posting. Ever since the lights came on all 4 stay together cruising the surface of the water.




Whole tank shot. Still looking for some good wood to drop in. When I'm done there will be drywall up so you'll only be able to see the glass framed into the wall.

Holy crap! You've got 3" aros in a 600g??? I would be horified every time I went to try to find them! lol.. A good site though... someone who buys monster fish to grow out in a monster tank. I doubt I've EVER seen that before.

If I had an unlimited supply of trout pellets I would definitely look at the ingridients, but I'd probably use it as a staple for whatever would eat them!

Breeding convicts may help now, but as the aros get bigger you'll never be able to keep up with their appetites. And in that big of a tank, they MIGHT be able to snag a few fry, but most of the fry will probably go to the bottom of the tank and never get eaten. Then you'll end up with 4 aros with a colony of convicts hiding in the rocks and wood.

Waters clearing up nicely. Bit of bad news tho. I bought some Four Line Pim cats for clean up that were about 5" which was fine for about 3 days then one morning I was 2 baby Arowanas short and there were 2 fat Pim cats . I tried like hell to get the cats out but I decided the easier thing to do was take out the 2 Remaining arowanas and mover them to the 29G for a few weeks to get a few inches bigger. They have been growing pretty good tho, I went back to the LFS where I got them and mine are noticably bigger than the 2 remaining there. I'd say close to an inch bigger. Mine are also starting to lose the transparent body and coloring up a bit and instead of eating one piece of cichlid stick they are eating two in one feeding. I looked at the trout chow and Its better to stick with the Cichlid sticks there is more Protein and less fat in the cichlid sticks.

Tank is lookin pretty freakin sweet. Sorry to hear about the lost aros though. In a 600 you'll have plenty of time and space to add a few other things though. Good luck
