It's a very wide term. Some people that dress up in white makeup and wear pink pigtails and sparkly eye shadow call themselves "goth." I refer to them as "Glam Goths" or "Hot Topic Goths." I think Marylin Manson would fit into this category. There's also the ones that wear all black with lots of spikes and skater pants that don't like to talk very much and claim to hate everything and everyone.

Then there's people like me that would call themselves Classic Goths, more Gothic than Goth. I wear a lot of black, but would never wear white makeup, black lipstick, or skater clothes. I dress rather classic...lots of deep reds mixed with black, but never looking slutty. Always sophisticated and sexy at the same time. Hmmm, I think this would fit my definition of what I strive to be:

That's Sarah McLachlan, BTW.

"Gothic" is also a state of mind. I see far too many kids calling themselves Goth that run around dressing themselves in Hot Topic wear (some is okay, but I think that store has gone from truly gothic to too much mainstream glam and rebellion) that really don't have a clue. Those are often the people that would call themselves Pagan and Satan worshippers in the same breath (which is impossible) and that also perpetuates the ignorance that surrounds what it truly is to be "Gothic." To be truly "Gothic" is to really get to know who you are and to acknowlege and embrace that person and not be afraid to show it. That is who I am.

Also, when I think of truly Gothic, I think of castles, knights, and Dragons, not Marylin Manson...

Thanks Draco. Everyone has told me that Gothics are Satan worshippers and hate everything. Thanks for clearing it up.

That is definately not true, but there are some misinformed individuals that ruin it for everyone. I must admit that I've run into a few people that do play the part that you have described.
